Public Speaking

Public Speaking and Debating

The English Department in Castleblayney College encourages junior and senior students to participate in public speaking and debating and our students have enjoyed considerable success in these areas. The Debating Team participates in the Concern Debates Competition, while the Public Speaking Team has progressed through County and Regional Finals to the national semi-final of the Mental Health Ireland Public Speaking Project. Castleblayney College students spoke at the North East Regional Mental Health Conference in Bailieborough, Co. Cavan where they were presented with hand crafted stained glass butterflies in recognition of their achievement and of their promotion of mental health awareness in the region. The English Department in Castleblayney College hopes to further the oratory skills of all our students through participation in public speaking and debating initiatives.

Poetry and Essay Competitions

The English department in Castleblayney College actively encourages students’ participation in poetry and creative writing competitions. This stimulates students’ creativity and fosters pride in their literary skills. Our students have won acclaim through their participation in a wide variety of competitions, including the Cavan Crystal Poetry Competition, Poetry Aloud and the Monaghan County Library Essay Competition.
